MARTIN, Tenn. - A chapter filled with a decade of progression comes to a close at University of Tennessee at Martin.

Phil Dane, who has served as UTM's athletic director since 2000, announced his mid-year retirement last week.

'It's been rewarding. A lot of great experiences," Dane said. "I think my years as Vice Chancellor helped prepare me very well for this job."

Prior to transitioning to the Skyhawks athletic department, Dane spent 13 years as the Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance.

Dane has had an extensive journey at UTM. Earning his MBA from the university in 1984 was only the beginning of his mark left on the school.

"The athletic directors in the Ohio Valley Conference are really impressed with where we [UTM] have moved with our facilities. With the exception of football, I think we are right there at the average or better," Dane explained.

In his tenure, Dane has witnessed a multitude of facility upgrades from the tennis courts to the football stadium.

Albeit, the numerous regular season and conference accolades were enjoyable during his time, the academic records by students is his most memorable feat.

"I think that academics is attitude related. It starts from the top with the coaches. I take the most pride in that."

Dane's retirement is effective Dec. 31.
