Desoto County Homes Clear Flood Plain

Olive Branch city officials will be sending letters to some homeowners informing them they will not have to buy flood insurance after all.

The Commercial Appeal reports officials expect 223 homes to be withdrawn from flood zone designations. City engineer Steve Bigelow says each homeowner could save $300 to $500 a year.

A few years ago, the Federal Emergency Management Agency redrew its maps, designating some properties that had not been in a flood zone as being in a flood zone. Mortgage companies soon began sending notices to homeowners to say they must buy flood insurance.

Mayor Sam Rikard says some of the information was incorrect and the city contested the maps.
