Pig Reference Lands Teacher In Trouble

The director of the Roane County Schools says a March incident in which a kindergarten teacher had students oink at a classmate was a black eye on the schools.

Teacher Debbie Hayes was given a letter of reprimand and a one-day suspension after the March 16 incident at Bowers Elementary school, according to The Knoxville News Sentinel.

Another teacher walked into Hayes’ classroom and saw children standing around a crying boy and making pig noises. That teacher told the principal what she saw.

The reprimand states Hayes told the principal she was tired of the boy’s messiness. The letter also states Hayes told students to make pig noises at the child.

The newspaper reported Hayes did not respond to inquiries seeking comment.

She has taught kindergarten in Roane County for 38 years.
