Man Dies During Dog Rescue

A man who was trying to get his dog off of a railroad track has been struck and killed by a train in Soddy-Daisy.

Authorities did not release the victim’s name after the incident on Tuesday afternoon, but the man was reported to be 50 years old.

Ashley Copeland lives near the tracks and she told the Chattanooga Times Free Press she heard the man calling urgently to his dog as she heard a train coming.

Copeland says the man was bent down, calling to his pet who wasn’t moving.

Soddy-Daisy Police Lt. Jeff Gann, who is related to the victim, says the train was evidently closer than the man thought it was. Police were notifying family members Tuesday.

Neighbors didn’t find the dog.
