JMCSS Considers Outsourcing Janitors

Leaders with the Jackson-Madison County School System are considering a plan to increase the amount of janitorial positions being outsourced. The plan does not call for anyone currently on staff to be fired, however, leaders say, full-time staff would not be replaced when they quit or retire. Instead, they would be replaced with GCS Services, a national contractor of cleaning services. Longtime custodians we spoke with say the plan raises concerns about the safety of the students. They question the drug screens, and criminal background procedures of the company. School leaders say GCS does conduct background screens. The proposal is expected to come before the Board this Thursday night for a vote. Our calls to GCS were not returned.
