Efforts to bring a four-year school to Jackson to replace Lambuth University is getting a boost from the new state administration. According to State Senator Lowe Finney of Jackson, the University of Memphis would get $5 million in the governor’s new budget proposal which is listed in the hard copy of the spending plan. Senator Finney told ABC 7 Eyewitness News that his understanding is that there would have to be a match of local money, which would pay the debt service and maintenance and the state dollars would go toward helping the University of Memphis make the purchase. Debt-ridden Lambuth University is closing effective, June 30. Local leaders have been working to get Memphis to take over the campus and bring the four-year school to the city.
