Plans for an annual banquet that helps fund efforts affecting racial equality have been announced. Community leaders and the Jackson-Madison Chapter of the NAACP officials said the 48th Annual Freedom Banquet will take place on Sunday, May 29. General counsel for the NAACP, Kim Keenan, will be this year’s keynote speaker. In addition, to serving as counsel to the national NAACP, Keenan operated her own law firm in Washington, DC. Jackson businessman Greg Milam and Gary Taylor are honorary co-chairs for the event. “We still have issues here in Madison County as we do in the rest of the nation in reference to racism, bigotry, etc, said Harrell Carter, president of the Jackson-Madison County Chapter of the NAACP. “We want to be able to work with different groups of people of all races and color to make sure that we can stamp it out.” ABC 7 Eyewitness News anchor Keli McAlister will emcee the event. For ticket information, contact the Jackson-Madison County chapter of the NAACP at (731) 660-5581.
