Five Year Old Dies In Shooting

Jackson police say a 5-year-old girl died after being accidentally shot.

Spokeswoman Colendula Green tells The Clarion-Ledger that 64-year-old Claude Hawkins had taken his granddaughter and 4-year-old grandson to look at horses on Sunday.

When Hawkins and his grandchildren were done sightseeing, Green says they returned to his Jeep with the granddaughter entering the vehicle first.

Green says the grandson then jumped into the car, landing on a rifle stored in the back seat and causing it to fire.

Hawkins and a friend realized the little girl was bleeding and took her to Central Mississippi Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead as a result of the gunshot wound.

Police have ruled the death accidental.
