Memphis Food Distributor Subject Of FDA Probe

Federal regulators have filed a complaint against two Memphis-based food warehouses, alleging that they have filthy conditions.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration asked U.S. District Court Wednesday for a permanent injunction against American Mercantile Corp., Ingredients Corporation of America and Damon S. Arney, owner and president of the companies.

The complaint said the companies prepare, pack and hold food under unsanitary conditions where it may have become contaminated with filth.

A woman who answered the phone Wednesday at American Mercantile Corp. said the owner had left for the day and no one else could comment on the complaint.

The complaint said investigators found widespread insect and rodent activity at the companies, which failed to correct violations.
