Educator of the Week – Rollins

Trenton Elementary School fourth grade teacher, Leah Jean Rollins, has wanted to teach since she was a little girl. “I grew up with a little black board and a white board in my room,” said Rollins. “And I just knew I wanted to be a teacher of some sort.” But life led her on a different route. After spending several years as a band director, Rollins finally has her own classroom, and ties in what she learned in band. “In band, you’re constantly preparing for performances- get through with one, and there’s another one and another one and another one,” said Rollins. “So I feel well equipped in getting children ready for big things.” And she has: this educator says her fourth graders are ready to move on to middle school. “We try to get them prepared to go to middle school, so I hope that they’re prepared – not only academically, but also in other ways to handle being a middle schooler,” said Rollins. Rollins says one of those ways is surrounding themselves with friends. “How to get along with others. And that there will be people in life that you won’t get along with for whatever reason and to be able to be the person you want to be and to have as many friends as you want. And have lots of friends, and let your friends have lots of friends, ” said Rollins. “I hope that’s what they’ll take away.”
