Collierville, Bartlett Mull Own School Systems
The mayors of two Memphis suburban cities say a federal judge’s upholding of state statute concerning merging the Memphis and Shelby County school systems gives them leave to start their own.
Bartlett Mayor Keith McDonald and Collierville Mayor Stan Joyner stated on Tuesday their interest in starting municipal school systems, according to The Commercial Appeal
Others say, however, that U.S. District Court Judge Samuel “Hardy” Mays’s decision Monday doesn’t address such local systems, finding only that the Norris-Todd bill the General Assembly passed this year was constitutional. Sen. Mark Norris and Rep. Curry Todd, both R-Collierville, sponsored the bill outlining the transition to the combined system.
Joyner said the suburban municipalities must protect the quality of education that brought families to those cities.
