Dyersburg Teacher Indicted on Sexual Battery Charge

“That’s a little child. They’ve got to deal with that,” said Allison Riggs who lives in Dyersburg. “It’ll be up to the jury to decide guilty or innocent,”said Captain Steve Isbell of the Dyersburg Police Department. In early July, police said the victim’s mother asked them for help. Exactly one month later, Stephen Michael Williams, 30, was arrested for sexual battery. “As a result of the allegations, the criminal investigations unit launched an investigation of the matter and presented the evidence to the Dyer County grand jury, who in turn issued an indictment for his arrest,” said Captain Isbell. Police are staying tight-lipped about exactly what they believe Williams did, but they do say the incident did not happen at the primary school. “I believe there was an acquaintance of the family and might also add this allegation did not happen on the property of the school system,” added Captain Isbell. But that did not stop the Dyersburg City School System from taking action. In a written statement, the system alleges it immediately suspended an employee without pay, although they would not mention Williams by name. They also said they will do everything necessary to protect their students. Still Riggs has questions. “Probably was others, probably no one found out about it. He just got caught on this one,” added Riggs.
