City of Jackson Turns 189
You may not realize it, but this week marked an important event in the history of the Hub City. Wednesday was the 189th anniversary when the city became known as Jackson. By act of the state legislature on August 17, 1822, the name of the city was changed from what settlers called Alexandria to Jackson. According to Historic Madison, Alexandria was located on the banks of the Forked Deer River, southwest of the downtown area on what is now the UT Center for Research and Education.
