McWherter Funds Help Pay For River Cleanup

A check from former Gov. Ned McWherter’s leftover campaign funds will help clean up the Pigeon River in East Tennessee.

Mike McWherter presented a check on Saturday – the final payout from his late father’s campaign account. The $2,500 went to a legal fund set up to pay for a potential lawsuit against a paper mill that has polluted the river, according to The Knoxville News Sentinel.

Mike McWherter said his father became a strong supporter of improving water quality in the Pigeon after seeing for himself the pollution from the former Champion paper mill in Canton, N.C.

Water quality has improved, but local officials say it still needs work.
