Memphis Officer Recovering From Gunshot

A Memphis police officer is recovering from a gunshot wound he suffered during a struggle in his unmarked police vehicle.

Sgt. Norman Benjamin was in critical but stable condition after surgery.

Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong told WMC-TV in Memphis that Benjamin, 47, was approached Saturday afternoon by the suspect and the two struggled over a firearm in his car Benjamin was shot in the stomach.

Benjamin has been with the department for 14 years and is an investigator with the auto theft bureau.

Armstrong says Benjamin was not wearing a protective vest.

Benjamin was the second Memphis officer to be shot this summer. Officer Timothy Warren was shot and killed in early July during a domestic dispute at a hotel.
