Hardeman County officials said a new approved budget will mean an unavoidable 24 cents property tax increase for its residents. Hardeman County Mayor Willie Spencer said the approved budget came with major cuts to essential departments within the county. “I’m not happy with it because I’m barely making it now,” said Bolivar resident, Barbara McKinnie. Mayor Spencer said the approved budget is a result of months of negotiations between him and county commissioners. “We ended up having to “bite the bullet” and we have a pretty healthy tax rate on funding the criminal justice center. It is an operational need,” said Mayor Spencer. Mayor Spencer said he does not foresee any job cuts, at this point, but warns due to a tight budget, should other expenses arise during the year it may be unavoidable.
