Police Investigate Rhea Street Shooting

Police detailed two men shot after a Friday night shooting in east Jackson. One man was fatally wounded in the gunfire while another man was briefly hospitalized. However, ABC 7 Eyewitness News has learned one of the detainees, a 17-year-old juvenile, was released late Saturday. A 23-year-old man remains in custody. According to police, Rodney Woodson, 31, of Jackson, was found dead in a yard near Rhea and East End Streets from apparent gunshot wounds. “It’s a mess,” resident Corey Marshall said. “I don’t like it at all. People that do stuff in this neighborhood are not from this neighborhood. They come from the outside. That’s what the biggest problem is in this area.” Friends of the victims wouldn’t talk to ABC 7 Eyewitness News on camera, but said they believe the shooting stemmed from a robbery. They claimed it involved money and drugs, which worries residents like Marshall. “I got a little kid around here, and these little kids can’t go out and play because so much stuff is happening in the neighborhood,” he said. Investigators said Woodson went to Rhea Street with two men, where a group of people had gathered. One man got into a fight with a person in the group. Gunshots were fired, killing Woodson and injuring the man in the shoulder and head. He has since been released from the hospital. As of late Saturday, no charges have been filed.
