Bethea Makes First Court Appearance

A 25-year-old Lane College student appeared in Jackson City Court, Friday on charges that he shot a felloe student on campus last week. Courtney Bethea of Jackson faces one charge of attempted first degree murder in the shooting as well as drug and weapon charges stemming from his arrest. The victim told investigators that there was a physical altercation on school property prior to the shooting and that Bethea said he was coming back to the school and “shoot it up” and did not care who was around. Officers arrested Bethea around 4, Thursday afternoon at an east Jackson apartment complex. Investigators said he admitted that marijuana, drug scales and a gun found in the home were his. Last Thursday after a confrontation on school property, officers said Bethea shot a 20-year-old Lane student from Detroit, hitting him in the leg and grazing his foot. Investigators credit the efforts of Lane College faculty and staff in helping them capture their suspect. Bethea’s bond was set at $150,000. His next court date is September 22.
