Woman Accused Of Theft From Dementia Patient
Police in Memphis have charged a woman with stealing more than $60,000 from an elderly retired city police captain who has dementia.
Christine Widner was arraigned Thursday in Shelby County Criminal Court on a charge of financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult.
Court records cited by The Commercial Appeal show the 29-year-old Widner is accused of trying to have C.P. Drake withdraw $15,000 from his SunTrust Bank account in March Bank officials refused because they questioned the 88-year-old Drake’s mental condition.
When Drake and Widner appeared two days later at the same branch, bank officials called police.
Court records show Widner told police she was supporting her heroin habit. Widner was held Friday at the Shelby County Jail, where records don’t indicate whether she has an attorney.
