School Children Encouraged to Walk
Students at South Elementary School laced up their tennis shoes and took a walk in the name of good health. Dozens of students, led by faculty and staff, walked about half a mile throughout the school, Wednesday afternoon as part of “International Walk to School Day.” Leaders said the event has two goals remind everyone of the simple joy of walking to school and the health benefits of regular daily activities. “They can develop this as a lifetime fitness goal, the children start when they are kindergarten, pre-K and we teach this everyday,” said Edwina Elston, a physical education specialist. “How important it is to keep their hearts healthy and we ask them t go home and share the information with their parents.”
