Brownsville Residents Honor Reverend
A stretch of highway 19 in Haywood county is now officially Reverend Clay Evans Highway. Evans was born in Brownsville and later developed a reputation as a passionate preacher in Chicago when he founded Fellowship Baptist Church in 1958. Members of the Clay Evans Scholarship Fund say it’s taken them about five years to make this highway dedication finally happen. “We thought it was just something we needed to do so this is a great occasion, this is in the place where he picked cotton right over here to the left of us. And now he’s back and we just thank God we can dedicate this while he’s still alive,” said Reverend Ricky Reed Mayor Franklin Smith also declared October 22, 2011 Reverend Clay Evans day.
