A birthday for one branch of the country’s military, the United States Marines. Thursday marks the 236th anniversary of the founding of the Marines, a day celebrated with ceremonies, formal galas and traditions. A message from Commandant General James Amos to Marines around the world said, “More than 10 years of wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have come with a cost of hundreds of lives and thousands wounded, but that the Marine Corps remains America’s expeditionary force in readiness.” “We have a time honored tradition of taking care of our own, that’s what marines do,” said Corporal Andy Vistrand, a USMC veteran. “That is what we are all about.” Locally, Marines celebrated with a cake cutting ceremony at the Veterans Home in Humboldt.
