Fire on N. Cumberland Likely Started by Squatters
Jackson firefighters said they are investigating their first squatter fire of the season. A house along North Cumberland Street near downtown, caught fire Sunday night and was completely destroyed. Fire investigators said a person or people had apparently taken shelter inside the abandoned home and set fire to stay warm. Firefighters said the neighborhood is lucky that no other homes were damaged. “This fire could very easily spread had there been a house on the other side, an occupied swelling on either side it could easily have spread to those,” said Fire Marshal Wayne Arnold, with the Jackson Fire Department. Arnold said this time of year these types of fires increase. He encourages you to be aware of suspicious activity around abandoned homes and to contact police immediately.
