KY Governor Renews Gambling Push

Gov. Steve Beshear is pushing for a constitutional amendment to expand the types of gambling allowed in Kentucky.

The second-term Democrat told reporters Tuesday that changing the constitution to allow gambling could generate needed revenue for state government. He said he intends to “go all out” to try to get the legislature to allow Kentuckians to vote on whether gambling should be expanded.

Kentucky has a long tradition of betting on horse races. But political leaders have been reluctant to open the state to slot machines or other casino-style games.

Beshear said he and his aides are working on details of his gambling proposal now, and that he hopes to get a plan passed by lawmakers in a legislative session that starts early next month.
