Board To Ask For Mayor’s Resignation

Leaders of an affluent north Mississippi town are calling for the mayor to resign after state auditors said he misspent thousands of taxpayer dollars, including some at a gay sex shop in Canada.

Southaven Mayor Greg Davis has come under increasing scrutiny since November when Mississippi’s auditor told him to pay back about $170,000 for allegedly improper billings. The auditor’s office has said one such bill was for $67 at Priape, a gay lifestyle store and sex shop.

The FBI is investigating Davis’ spending.

After the sex-shop revelation, Davis, a Republican who ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 2008, said he is gay and getting divorced.

Alderman Ronnie Hale says the board will formally ask Davis to resign during Friday’s meeting. But Hale said the board can’t force Davis out.
