Reaction to Lexington Suspensions

Lexington’s Fire Chief, Glenn Wood and utilities manager, Michael Harper remained on suspension from their jobs Thursday because they do not live within the city limits. The city’s charter cites the two officers must live within the city limits. Although the two men have Henderson County addresses, they already held their positions before the policy was put into place in 2008. Wood and Harper both told 7 Eyewitness News it was “understood” that they would simply be grandfathered in, so the policy would not apply to them. Mayor Tim Pierce’s decision to suspend them is causing a lot of talk around the city. “I think they’ve done a good job so far. The fire chief saved a lot of people’s houses from getting fired and getting killed. And the other one saved a lot of people from poison and everything,” said local resident John Greenway. The board of aldermen and Mayor Pierce will discuss the issue further in a special meeting Friday night at 6:00. Harper and Wood said they plan to attend.
