The mayors of Jackson and Madison County talked about their hopes for the new year, Friday. Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist and Madison County Mayor Jimmy Harris spoke during the first Friday meeting in downtown Friday. Mayor Harris focused on education and the impact of the University of Memphis moving to the Lambuth campus. Mayor Gist said the recent activity in the downtown City Walk development shows there is interest, both for residential and commercial development, in the core of the city. “A lot of people will be visiting the West Tennessee Healthcare complex or wellness center, medical center, retail going in there, 156 new apartments, so wherever there’s people present then new businesses will follow,” Gist said. The First Friday Forum is a monthly event where business and community leaders come together to talk about downtown development. The event is sponsored by First United Methodist Church and Jackson Downtown Development.
