Fund Loss Threatens Charter Schools
The loss of federal funds to help offset costs to start charter schools in Tennessee has officials predicting a “significant strain.”
Roblin Webb, principal of Freedom Prep in Memphis, told The Commercial Appeal the money can be used to help lease facilities and pay teachers for the first three years of operations .
Former Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton, who is working to open seven charter schools, says the funding loss could lead to a delay in opening some of them. He had hoped to open all seven in the fall.
The funding is no longer available due in part to the rapid increase of charter schools across the state.
