Kentucky Fires State Beekeeper

The firing of the state beekeeper has created a buzz among apiarists across Kentucky.

Phil Craft was among at least 14 non-merit employees fired when new Agriculture Commissioner James Comer took office this month.

Craft had been on the job for more than 12 years and told the Lexington Herald-Leader that he never considered himself as a political hire (http://bit.ly/wDIJ0w). Comer’s office said the commissioner has had to make some “difficult decisions” due to budget cuts.

Beekeepers around the state say it won’t be easy for Comer to find someone better than Craft.

Kentuckiana Beekeepers Association President Lorie Jacobs said Craft had a passion for beekeeping and was patient with newcomers.
