Memphis Landmark Gets Earthquake Protection
Engineers have planned a 30-foot-thick concrete wall to protect The Pyramid in Memphis from the possibility of a major earthquake.
The project comes after studies show the west side of The Pyramid could move toward the Mississippi River in a quake, while the east side remained in place, according to The Commercial Appeal
The wall will cost $7.18 million dollars and construction is expected to begin in about six weeks.
The wall will extend the length of two football fields and go down 130 feet into the soil.
Construction of the wall was agreed upon to allay Bass Pro Shops’ concerns about converting the structure to a retail sporting goods store.
