Nuclear Plant Security Questioned

The security contractor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is investigating possible sleeping on the job by a guard and unauthorized use of a phone inside a secure building where uranium that could be used in a nuclear weapon is stored.

A WSI Oak Ridge spokeswoman told the Knoxville News Sentinel an investigation has been started.

Photographs of someone described Tuesday by WSI spokeswoman Courtney Henry as a person “in question” were distributed to WSI Oak Ridge, the U.S. Department of Energy and the media.

Henry declined to provide any names and said it is not known if the photos were taken inside the building where fissionable uranium-233 is kept.

Other than location uncertainty, she said the photographed subject could have been stretching and shutting their eyes for a minute.
