On Monday, it was East meets West as West Tennessee families welcomed in the Chinese New Year. Monday marked the beginning of the Chinese holiday. And, as they do every year, a group of families with ties to China gathered to celebrate. “Everyone you know is here and you can celebrate and see the traditions,” said Shelby McCage. Part of every Chinese New Year celebration is eating foods that are considered lucky, like noodles, dumplings, whole fish and tangerines. “It’s pretty cool because I didn’t think I was going to be able to do all the stuff that I did back in China,” said Stephen Thrasher. “This is pretty great.” This year is the Year of the Dragon, which according to the zodiac calendar is considered the mightiest and most favored of the 12 zodiac signs. For that reason, the last Year of the Dragon, in 2000, Hong Kong saw a more than five percent rise in births.
