KY Gambling Bill Imminent
A long-awaited proposal to open Kentucky to casino gambling could be introduced in the Senate within days.
Senate Democratic Floor Leader R.J. Palmer of Winchester said Wednesday that talks are continuing with the governor’s office on the exact wording of a proposed constitutional amendment but that an agreement is imminent.
It remained unclear Wednesday whether Palmer or Republican Sen. Damon Thayer of Georgetown would sponsor the measure.
Gov. Steve Beshear has been pushing for years to allow Kentuckians to wager on more than horse races. He wants to lift a constitutional ban on casinos in hopes of keeping money in Kentucky that is now being gambled in neighboring states.
If lawmakers approve a constitutional amendment, it would be placed on the ballot for voters to ratify or reject in November.
