Herron Speaks about His Decision Not to Seek Re-election
State Senator Roy Herron said his current term in the legislature will be his last. The Dresden Democrat announced Thursday he will not seek re- election later this year. Herron said he is leaving politics and plans to take over as president of the McWherter Center, a non-profit group with a goal of providing scholarships and higher education opportunities for Tennessee students. “We created a crime victims Bill of Rights in the Tennessee Constitution for the first time in Tennessee history, ” said State Senator Roy Herron, (D) of Dresden. “At the time we did that, criminals and those accused of crimes had over 20 rights in Tennessee Constitution. We changed that and put those rights in the Constitution and it has made a difference for crime victims.” Herron, who is an attorney and former Methodist minister has served as a state legislator since 1986.
