The structural engineers hired by the City of Greenfield to investigate the case of last Monday’s deadly collapse have released their findings. The engineers with J.P. Thomas and Associates out of Memphis determined a combination of excavation adjacent to the building, along with the use of a front loader, which caused vibration and the rains and winds of the storm the night before could have caused the roof joists to rotate, causing the collapse. The engineers estimate the excavation for a new retaining wall at four to 10 feet.
