Isaac Delays Trial in Sheriff’s Death
Jackson County Assistant District Attorney Cherie Wade says the capital murder trial of Brandy Nicole Williams will begin with opening arguments a week later than planned due to Tropical Storm Isaac. Williams and her boyfriend, Christopher Lee Baxter, were arrested on a charge of capital murder in the July 21, 2010 killing of George County Sheriff Garry Welford during a vehicle pursuit. A jury in May convicted Baxter of capital murder and sentenced him to life without parole. The two allegedly ran over Welford, causing his death. The trial was moved to Lafayette County due to pre-trial publicity. Because of the pending storm, Special Judge Richard McKenzie decided to recess the trial until Sept. 4 after a jury is selected.
