Woman Accused of Trying to Drown Baby
A Purvis woman is accused of killing her three-month-old baby by leaving it in a neighbor’s swimming pool. The baby died Tuesday after six days in University Medical Center, and the charge against 43-year-old Mary Elizabeth Booker was upgraded from aggravated assault to murder. Booker was arrested Aug. 29 and is being held in the Lamar County Jail in lieu of $1 million bond. Purvis Police Chief Richard Gibbs says Booker allegedly went into the pool with her baby, then went back home. He says the baby was submerged for about fifteen minutes. Doctors at Forrest General Hospital revived the baby, which was then taken to University Medical Center in Jackson.
