Civil Rights Museum gets Gates Foundation grant
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – The National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis says it will use a $549,000 grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to improve its website and develop a stronger social media strategy. Museum president Beverly Robertson says the grant announced Thursday at the museum also will be used to add information tidbits to some historical exhibits that illustrate how education influenced the civil rights movement. The grant is separate from the museum’s ongoing public campaign to raise $40 million for a major renovation of the facility located at the old Lorraine Motel, the site of Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination in 1968. The museum chronicles the history of the civil rights movement and features the room where King stayed while he was in Memphis supporting a sanitation workers strike.
