Federal grant only part of Memphis homeless plan
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – Memphis officials say a $5 million federal grant to help keep homeless families together is important to the city. Community Alliance for the Homeless executive director Katie Kitchin said homelessness is often what she called a pathway to foster care. The Commercial Appeal reported Memphis Mayor A C Wharton said the grant announced Wednesday will let the city get whole families into permanent housing they can afford. Besides the federal dollars, four nonprofit foundations are putting a combined $10 million into the project over the next five years. The federal government estimates that homeless families account for more than one-third of overall homelessness.
