Study Shows Women-Owned Businesses On The Rise

BOLIVAR, Tenn. – Women-owned businesses are booming, according to a new report by the American Express OPEN, but researches said that number is growing substantially in a few states, including Tennessee. According to the report, the number of women owning businesses in Tennessee has grown faster than the national average over a 16-year period. The report shows that Tennessee ranks 14 in the nation for growth, with women owning close to 200,000 businesses. “When I thought about opening my business, I didn’t think it would be easy,” said Deborah Brasfield, owner of On The Square Gallery and Gifts in Bolivar. “A lot of people don’t expect us to be as aggressive and persistent as men,” said Dion Thornton, owner of Above Average Sports in Jackson. According to the report, although women owning businesses have increased, they still lag behind in terms of revenue and employment.
