WEAKLEY COUNTY, Tenn. More than a dozen hospital workers at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin were laid off, Thursday. Hospital officials said the firing came as a result of the hospital making mandatory staffing adjustments to 16 positions. Some Fired Employees told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News that the lay-off was unexpected to many employees who have worked at the hospital for years. Officials with Volunteer Community Hospital said the cuts were necessary. “These changes are being made with compassion and we will provide appropriate support for impacted employees,” said Lora McDonald, director of public relations. ” We value the skills and service of each individual and regret that the reductions are necessary.” McDonald would not reveal which departments the cuts had been made in and would neither confirm nor deny if there would be more cuts to follow. “We have carefully considered these decisions to ensure we will not compromise patient care, quality or safety and that no one area of the hospital is over impacted,” said McDonald.
