9-Year-Old Boy Saves Family from House Fire

CARROLL CO., Tenn. — A nine-year-old is being called a hero after saving his family of six in a house fire. “I was trying to get him to get out of bed but he wouldn’t get up and get out,” Walker Ashley said, claiming he wasn’t going to leave his home without his brother. Nine-year-old Ashley said he woke up to flames that put his family in grave danger. “I was sleeping,” Walker Ashley said. “I woke up, and I smelled some smoke. It was on my cover at the bottom of my feet and my feet were getting hot.” Carroll County firefighters say they got the call around 2:00 a.m. Thursday. “The bed just busted up in flames,” Walker’s mother, Lori Ashley said. Walker tells WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News the flames frightened his older brother as they fought to leave the room. The pairs screams woke up their parents. Lori Ashley and her husband say they frantically tried to put out the fire on their own, but it was too late. “I’d ran in the kitchen to grab a glass of water,” Lori said. “By the time I got in there we were coughing, you couldn’t see.” One of Walker’s brothers, Randal Lusk wonders what would’ve happened if Walker didn’t wake up. “We do fight a lot but you know I owe him a lot and I thank him,” Lusk said. Firefighters say no one was injured in the blaze and the cause of the fire is under investigation. Officials say the mobile home is a total loss.
