Tennessee G Thompson asks for release to transfer

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Tennessee guard Darius Thompson has asked to be released from his scholarship.
Thompson’s father, Lonnie Thompson, said Monday that Tennessee coach Donnie Tyndall has given the 6-foot-5 guard the opportunity to return to Tennessee if he decides to come back. Lonnie Thompson says “as of the first of last week, he was set on staying. Then at the end of the week, he just felt like it may be time to move on.”
Thompson started 10 games this past season and averaged 2.6 points and 2.4 assists per game. His departure would be the latest defection to hit Tennessee since Tyndall took over for Cuonzo Martin, now at California.
All four recruits to sign with Tennessee in November were released from their letters of intent.
