MIDTOWN JACKSON, Tenn. – It was a first for Alexander Elementary School, Thursday night. The school hosted Literacy Night for students and their families. The theme – food! School leaders said every grade level is currently working on literacy based activities pertaining to food. That includes things like creating cook books or reading the children’s book, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” Teachers believe this is a great opportunity for families to read together. “When we send these books home, we are hoping that our children are sharing them with their younger brothers and sisters, their cousins, their neighbors,” said Principal Deborah Frey. “We want them all to realize how important reading is.” Families who participated in Literacy Night enjoyed a movie, got a free book and decorated their own cupcakes.
