Agency hosts workshop to warn elderly about scams

WEST JACKSON — Southwest Tennessee’s Agency on Aging and Disability hosted a workshop Tuesday educating families and senior citizens about the dangers of scams directed at the elderly. The Many Faces of Fraud workshop covered topics such as identity theft, financial and physical abuse, phone and internet scams, healthcare fraud and more. Officials hope the event and others like it will make many older citizens more aware of similar online dangers. “They seem to be targeting our seniors a lot, and those generations, they’re nice, they’re polite, they’re very trusting,” said LaNelle Godsey with Tennessee Medicare Assistance. “So it’s hard to think about someone trying to take advantage. They will try to be your friend.” Radio personality Steve Bowers moderated the event. Representatives from Tenn Care and the AARP also were there to help.
