VFW brings Christmas to senior vets
CARROLL COUNTY, Tenn. — Veterans in Carroll County took an opportunity to add thank you to the phrase, “Merry Christmas” Sunday. “This is stop 1, we have 6 different stops in Carroll county. We’re taking gifts to all of our veterans in assisted living and nursing homes,” Sergeant First Class Melissa Walker said. Walker said they visited more than 40 veterans. “Anything that’s a change is a bright spot,” said Retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Colonel Bill Whitfill about the surprise visit from the VFW Post. Some volunteers from the McKenzie VFW said this is a chance to say thank you to those who fought before them. “It means so much to all veterans when you say I appreciate your service,” Sergeant First Class George Nolan said. Nolan said he enjoys visiting the seniors and hopes future generations of fighters would do the same if he were in a nursing home. VFW members said there are about three thousand veterans from all post World War II battles currently living in Carroll county.
