CHESTER COUNTY, Tenn.,–Henderson police said serious crimes are down in the city of about 6,000 people. Some crimes have dropped as much as 70 percent, according to Assistant Police Chief Leon Johnson.”We’ve had less burglaries and aggravated assaults,” Johnson said. Johnson said the city’s most serious offenses, theft and assaults declined between October of last year and this January compared to the same period a year ago. “We’re happy with that and just hope it continues,” he said. Johnson said he believes the shift comes from putting the right people in jail,”A lot of times we put some body in jail and it almost completely stops, so you would have to believe it’s making a huge difference,” he said. Some residents said a low crime rate is why they chose to call Henderson home,”It’s just the kind of place I think maybe existed in the 40’s and 50’s but you find it so rarely anymore,” Wanda Black said. Black relocated from Chicago to Henderson in 1980. She said the city has been a perfect place to raise a family and grandchildren.”I think it’s probably surprising that it hasn’t changed as much as I would have expected in 30 years,” she said.
