JACKSON, Tenn. — Tuesday was National Chocolate Cake Day, and the unofficial holiday was celebrated by chocolate lovers everywhere. In the 1830s and 40s, chocolate was consumed primarily as a beverage because cakes did not yet exist. It wasn’t until an Austrian chef used two layers of chocolate dough with jam spread in the middle. With chocolate frosting poured over the dessert, the chocolate cake was born. WBBJ asked a local expert why people love chocolate cake so much. “I think they got an absolute sugar rush, a sugar high, and it just makes them happy,” said Neill Bartlett with HaliHannigan’s Cupcakery. “Everybody loves comfort food, and chocolate cake is certainly right up there at No. 1.”
