JACKSON, Tenn. — With Madison County being one of the many in West Tennessee under a winter storm warning, the Jackson-Madison County Emergency Management Director has a few things people should know to be prepared. Milk and bread are two things people rush to stock up on when snow is in the forecast. Jackson-Madison County EMA Director Marty Clements said you need much more than that. “Make sure you’ve got extra medicines, make sure you’ve got extra things for kids to do around the house,” Clements said. Clements said in addition to items in your home you need to prep your car. “There’s items that you need to put in your car. If you’re stuck there you can take care of yourself and stay.” Clements said when driving, carry a fire extinguisher, a first-aid kit and a vest, but when severe weather hits you need to prepare above and beyond. Clements said, “Right now I’m telling people put a blanket in there, jumper cables, make sure you know how to use jumper cables.” He also said you’ll want a flashlight and some food if you get stuck on the road. West Tennesseans were out Sunday prepping for the storm. “We’ve already been to the grocery store, taken care of everything. My kids live in Knoxville, so we’re just heading back home,” Randy Mann said. “We’ve got snow shovels, we’ve got ice scrapers, we’ve got de-icers, so hopefully we won’t have to go to work tomorrow and we can stay home and enjoy the weather,” Sheila Prior said. “Mostly milk and eggs and basic products we need,” Evelyn Bryant said. Clements said to be mindful of cords and heaters and have a plan if you do lose power. “The more prepared that you talk about with your family and your kids and everything, the better off you’re going to be,” Clements said. Clements explained all first-responders are prepared to assist residents who may need help during the snow.
