HUMBOLDT, Tenn. — An attempted bank robbery at BancorpSouth in Humboldt sent one person to the hospital Wednesday, according to law enforcement sources. A close friend of the victim said the bank employee was shot three times. “It’s sad,” said Johnnie Ratliff of Humboldt. “I’m still in shock.” Ratliff said she knows the victim. “She’s really a nice lady,” she said. The shooting surprised people in the small town, such as Harry Davidson, who said he opened a furniture store in Humboldt more than 40 years ago. “We have our share, don’t get me wrong,” Davidson said. “There’s things that go on, but nothing like this.” Davidson said he does business at BancorpSouth and also knows the victim. “It happens in other places and other times, but it doesn’t happen here and so it’s unnerving when you hear about it,” he said. FBI agents, police and sheriff‘s deputies swarmed the downtown area searching for clues. “For somebody to come along and do that, I just — this is a nice little town,” Ratliff said. “We don’t really have a lot of trouble here.” Davidson said he wants to figure out a safer way to do things and make sure neighbors check on each other and report anything suspicious.
